CARY, N.C. (AP) — Brian Ownby scored in the third minute of overtime to help Virginia defeat Wake Forest, 2-1, on Friday night in the N.C.A.A. men’s College Cup semifinals.
Ownby, a sophomore forward, entered the game as a substitute late in the second half. He ran down the middle of the field to control a long pass from Jonathan Villanueva, split two defenders and popped the ball over goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald.
“I couldn’t feel the cold,” Ownby said after ripping off his jersey to start a wild celebration in temperatures dipping below 30 degrees.
The Cavaliers will play top-seeded Akron on Sunday for the championship, after the Zips beat North Carolina, 5-4, on penalty kicks.
The teams were scoreless through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before Blair Garvin’s shot into the lower-left corner allowed the Zips to advance.
The result for Akron (23-0-1) goes down as a tie, though, leaving the program tied with Indiana’s 1997 team for the N.C.A.A. record for most consecutive wins in a season.
The Cavaliers (18-3-3), the No. 2 seed, beat the third-seeded Demon Deacons (17-4-3), a rival from the Atlantic Coast Conference, for the third time this season.
