News

Today there was peace in the world. There is little to report. The financial markets remained stable. Not one single bullet was fired anywhere and the weather was calm with untroubled seas and sunshine everywhere. Swine flu figures didn’t alter and there were no hold ups on motorways. Nobody of any note died and there were no important anniversaries. In the world of sport, there were no transfer rumours or angry spats, no debates about Formula One’s future or Andy Murray’s prospects on the tennis court. No lions escaped from zoos and no Japanese fishing fleets went out on scientific research missions to kill whales and bring them back to Tokyo for eating. All Somalian pirates had a sick day. No politicians abused their status in order to claim dubious expenses and Jesus did not risk a second coming. So as there is no news, here’s a little music…..

Smells

Walking down to "The Banner" for three well-earned mid-week pints, I noticed sweet smells from several different blossoms mingled in our springtime air. Perhaps it was the late April temperature or that light rain shower earlier this evening but it seemed to me that something had enhanced the aromas emanating from fading blossoms now hanging limply on leafy branches.

They say that we associate memories with particular smells. I can't say that that is true for me though there is a particular smell of polish and varnish mixed with the kind of wood shavings that Mr Assert the caretaker would chuck over small puddles of vomit that takes me right back to primary school days which in turn reminds me of Miss Readhead's perfume - roses and talcum powder - an old-fashioned/old lady smell from long ago.

Though some of my senses are not as sharp as they were when I was younger, my sense of smell remains acute and there are some smells that I simply adore. Above all others, my favourite smell has to be that slightly metallic odour that hangs in the air following rain after a dry spell. And I love the smell of hot tar when road gangs are repairing or resurfacing roads. What does it speak of? Liquorice? Trinidad?

Foul smells include the revolting odour of cigarette smoke that clings lavatorially to smokers' hair and clothing. Then there's the stale smell you find in charity shops, intensified in old people's homes. Dog daisies and dead chickens. Neglected public conveniences. Canine faeces on your shoe.

I love the smell of new books and glossy magazines and football programmes. Push your nose against the pages and sniff. And of course there are cooking smells - the grilling of bacon, roast chicken sizzling in the oven, bubbling Lamb Madras, Christmas mince pies and honey-sweet Victoria sponges. Gorgeous.

A snuffed out candle. Cordite on bonfire night after the rockets have flown. New cars and newly mown grass. The pinkness of babies' new skin. Petroleum. "Vosene" shampoo. "Tabac" aftershave and fresh lemon juice. Onions in a pan and freshly chopped garlic. Freshly dug soil - the smell of the earth.

The sense of smell is perhaps less easy to articulate than the other senses but it is nonetheless precious, helping us to define and relish the lives we are leading. Where would be in an odourless world? We'd be lost, quite lost.

Return To Sender?

The end of last week I got notified via my postman that someone had tried to send me something but there was a 30p shortfall on the postage. For out of towners that's about around 45c (US), 60c (AU). As a result Royal Mail expected the recipient (me) to pay the shortage plus an admin fee of £1.00 before they would deliver. Hardly fair but if it's something you really want, kind of (regretfully) acceptable and you can always take it up with the sender later. So imagine my annoyance when I finally received this unsolicited flier/junk mail...
















Seems to me this handling fee is an unfair levy on the poor recipient who has done nothing wrong and basically a licence for Royal Mail to print money. Next time I'll know better and let the post office return to sender.

It has been officially declared that India will host more matches in this edition of the World Cup.After the terrorist attacks in Pakistan all the matches which was supposed to be held in Pakistan have been canceled.So the venue for all the 49 mathces of the 2011 World Cup are

SriLanka will host 12 Matches
Bangladesh will host 8 Matches.

There is a talk that the Pakistan players may totally skip the Matches that are to be played in India.But the ICC is not concerned about that and they have declared that Pakistan is not a safe country to play the World Cup.

Last Monday, I made my debut in a Chinese language newspaper in Hong Kong following the interview I had with cub reporter Li Ming Kit of the Ming Pao Newspaper Group at the new Yorkshire Pudding bar restaurant. She kindly sent me a "soft copy" of the article and I have cropped it to highlight the image of me indulging in my second favourite pastime - scoffing tucker! On this occasion it was free roast beef, veg and Yorkshire puddings with gravy - all washed down with a nice free pint of Murphy's stout

As I am sure there are few visitors to this blog who are fluent in Cantonese, I will translate.... "As I interviewed the staff at the new restaurant, in walked a gorgeous hunk of a man with bulging biceps and a sexy Elvis-like pout. Unfortunately, he was with his English wench. Nevertheless, I made a beeline for him. Oooo! He was gorgeous and when I heard his rough Yorkshire accent, my legs felt like jelly. Manfully, he tucked into his free meal and gave it the thumbs up - claiming that the puddings were as good as his mother used to make back in the mythical land of Yorkshire.... He was none other than the well-known English blogger Mr Yorkshire Pudding. It was a privilege to meet him."

Slumdog star Rubina's father case has been closed stating that he is innocent.There was no guilt found against him and so the police have released him.The reason that they give is that he has got any money from anyone for and moreover the daughter is safe.

Thus the police who thought Rafiq Qureshi was the accused was found to be innocent.Rahim Shaikh a senior police officer said that everything is fine and they find Rafiq Qureshi to be an innocent person after the interrogation.He also added that that is the reason for releasing him.

Shrieking rotating chairs, shouting assholes, chattering nonsense. A so called computer lab filled with handicap students and non-handicap students  or the non handicap students that slide over the ceramic cream color tiles with the wheel chairs with little wheels. The teacher indulged in his sown horrendous duties. Boredom surrounds me. My screwed up mind vibrates. I become the devil and my workshop kick-starts.

The ancient white idiot boxes lie switched off like dormant zombies, waiting to get their asses kicked and get their bodies re-buried.

I see them, they see me and then they see my writometer. I approach them with the pen. Do hell with those 15”/17” CRT, they aren’t my target, I am interested in something that lays lower, THE KEYBOARD.

New and old, black and white keyboards lay in their graves i.e the scrolling drawers. My mind tweaked my hands, and they followed the pen to crack the code.

I inserted the pen tip, under the key to be displaced, and then under the key to be inserted, fast but stealthily. Determination, danger, will, wickedness circled my head as I played with the keys. F1,F2,F3,F4 turned SEXY and F5,F6,F7,F8 changed their sexes to become GIRL.

Not to mention the multiple keyboards I  screwed up with the “F” word.

Hell if I can do it, why not you. The most enjoyable thing about the useless Keyboard Scrabble is that it might slaughter your boredom, though it might do the same with you, if the keyboard ain’t yours. But what’s the fun if you do It on your keyboard.

My computer knows me better than I do… or it just cares for me… It has got some special artificial intelligence that whenever my examination gives a knock, it locks itself in weird ways, cringes my head with its infertility.

It tries everything, every damn’ thing to frustrate me  and divert my attention from it to me.

It handles my abuses, spanks and nuisances, but still it continues its Satyagraha and Gandhigiri to force  me to immerse myself in the disastrous tree waste i.e. the damned textbooks, so I can atleast pass in the exams.

In 2007, it screwed my head with frequent restarts like it was shivering with malaria, in its case I was the plasmodium.

I tried the non-Gandhian way at the C.P.U (since I suck at hardware messing). I slapped it with variations of forces and velocities, and sometimes it worked, just like a kid beaten by its parent, cries for a minute and then the kid is back to his hell.

Finally I called those S.O.B. computer engineers who show tantrums for a week or two, ignoring calls, handling them and making erratic excuses, as if they have made a deal with telecom companies, so that the moron whose computer turns moron has to shell out the money on telephone calls first and then on those damn bastards.

Now as my half yearly Ist semester exams shrieks are getting nearer and nearer, the Computer is back to haunt me so that I could finally study after wasting a whole lot of months on it.

Now its hanging, crashing, grunting, growling, turning sufi songs into heavy metal. And if that wasn’t enough, it increased the corruption levels by corrupting the windows.

An d now its suffocating along with me. Hope I respect my dear PC’s  temporary sacrifices for my better and let that hope rust in some Ghajini rod.

Why do I get the impression the youths responsible for the decor in the background will soon be put behind something similar to the foreground? LOL

Can you believe, it a few years back the local youths managed burn down the town cricket pavilion one night. Their punishment was to have a custom hut built in it's place they could decorate and no doubt use to get up to no good. Plus they got a shiny new skate park. All paid for by the council (and therefore ultimately the tax payers). The cricket team had to find a new home somewhere else. Hardly seems fair does it?

Australian team has pulled out of th Davis Cup which was scheduled to be held in Chennai from May 8 to May 10th.The main reason for this could be the security concern that is prevailing in India.IPL which was to be scheduled in Indian mainly moved outside India because of security concerns.Is IPL showing a wrong signal to all other country people that India is not a safe place.We have to wait and see how all other countries behave and what opinion they have about India and other Asian countries.
