The Birmingham museum of Art, Alabama
The Birmingham museum of Art, the Southeast’s largest municipal museum has some 18000 works, from Italian Early Renaissance to contemporary American. The museum houses the region’s largest collection of Asian art and has the finest collection of Wedge wood outside England.
The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and Museums adjacent to the Civic Center, displays memorabilia of such Alabama athletic heroes as coach Bear Bryant, Jesse Owens, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron. In the Kelly Ingram park area, southwest of the Civic Center is the 16th Street Baptist Church, a civic rights landmark where numerous protests were staged in the 1960s. A bomb planted exploded here in 1963 and a plaque in the memory is there. On Saturday, tours are by appointment only.
