A difficult outing for Dubé

Jessica Dubé had a hard week at the Canadian nationals in Victoria. Skating singles at Canadians for the first time since 2008, the 3-time pairs champion struggled alone on the ice.

Her long-time partner Bryce Davison is still recovering from knee surgery due to osteochondritis dissecans, a condition which caused a chip of bone to break off in practice. The commentators said that Jess had trouble finding motivation without a partner. Her new programmes were artistic and easy to watch, composed by her boyfriend, olympic ice dance champion Scott Moir.

However the programmes lacked one important thing - triple jumps.

In her short programme, Dubé managed a clean triple-lutz,double toe combination. She went into the free skate a respectable 5th place (barely 2 points behind second place Amelie Lacoste). However in the free skate she fell on her first triple flip then doubled or fell on all her later jumps.

An article from the Toronto Sun reports that Dubé was battling a viral infection with severe chills the day of her free skate. Her singles career may not progress beyond the Canadian nationals but the hope is that rumours that Davison will not return are false, and this promising Canadian pair will take to the ice again soon.
