I sadly had to miss the second half of the Ladies short programme from Bern as life got in the way of blogging. Apologies to anyone who was following my live tweets.
The competition started off promisingly with the 2 skaters qualifying last out of the preliminaries (
Fleur Maxwell of Luxembourg and
Hristina Vassileva of Bulgaria) skating clean short programmes with triple jump combinations, often the first groups are a complete splat-fest. I was pleased to see their efforts rewarded with places in the free dance.
Ira Vannut of Belgium, who won the preliminary round, continued to exceed expectations and finished 10th in a strong field of ladies.
Kiira Korpi has taken the lead with a classy performance including a triple-triple combinations. She recieved positive grades of execution from every judge on every element. Russia's
Ksenia Makarova is in 2nd after her fiery flamenco programme.
The star of the afternoon however must be
Sarah Meier, the swiss star who skated at her first Europeans in 2000 has already announced this will be her swan song. And she skated a blinder, landing a clean routine with all positive GOEs and winning the crowd and the judges. She sits in 3rd going into the free.
