There's a frenchman in the lead after the men's short programme in Bern, but it's not the 3 time champion
Brian Joubert. It is the young pretender
Florent Amodio.
Interestingly both skating to the same choice of music,
Once Upon a Time in Mexico, it was Amodio who executed a clean and energetic routine with a triple axel and triple-triple combination. Amodio has some of the fastest rotation jumps in the business.
Behind Amodio are 2 other young talents,
Michael Brezina of the Czech Republic and 'Mini-Pluchenko'
Artur Gachinski of Russia. Brezina skated a programme filled with quality, Gachinski came out with all the arrogance and jumping firepower of a Mishin student, pulling off a quad-triple combination.
Kevin Van der Perren also came out with great jumps and an engaging performance to take 4th place. His spins were slow with low levels but his jumps and character won the crowd. He was elated at the end of his programme. Tomas Verner had a bad fall on his triple axel but engaged the audience with his
Singing in the Rain performance.
Joubert started well but overcooked his quad toe and had to add a double to the combination. He them fell on his triple lutz, leaving him a disappointing 7th place after the short. He is currently 8 points behind Amodio but only 3 points from medal contention, setting up an exciting free skate.
The top 24 of 28 advance to the free skate.
