It wasn't perfect but it was good enough.
Savchenko & Szolkowy's free skate held off the Russian opposition for their 4th European title.
The germans sold their pink panther programme to the max. The jumps and throws were light and huge! The only major errors came when Aliona lost track of the side by side spin and they both doubled the salchow jumps.
They had left the door open, but only slightly.
Kavaguti and Smirnov skated a serene and beautiful programme to Clair de Lune. Slight bobbles on the spins showed the pressure was on. They won the free skate and set themselves up well for worlds but couldn't quite make up the deficit from the short programme and had to settle for silver in Bern.
My personal favourite skate of the evening goes to their fellow Russians
Bazarova & Larionov who skated the best artistic programme of the night (in my subjective opinion) to the inspiring tones of The Man in the Iron Mask, conjuring up memories of
Alexei Yagudin's 2002 olympic victory.
Special mentions go out to 4th, 5th and 7th placed teams, all in their first europeans, all with great promise for the future.
Scery moment of the day went to Brits
Kemp & King where he got his blade stuck in the ice on their last lift and sent her tumbling down. Thankfully it wasn't her head that found the ice first. It could have been a lot worse. A shame for a team who had better unison and interpretation than in previous years.
The medal ceremony was a bit of a joke, with the men trying very hard to keep their partners warm as the petite ladies shivered in the ever freezing Swiss Arena.
Senior Pairs and Ladies kick off at the
US Nationals tonight. I'll report in the morning as it goes on rather late UK time!
